art process
c o l o r p e n c i l s
Many of us used color pencils in elementry school, but who would have guessed such great artwork could be created with them! I started playing around with color pencils in 2001, and have done a few drawings with them. My color pencils are artist grade prismacolor brand, which are wax based. I enjoy working on colored and black paper with them.
Step 1 & 2: Unfortunately I don't have a copy of the photo (step one: selection of a photo) that this drawing was created from any longer. Also I completed some of the earliest stages (including step 2; a detailed sketch showing shading) before I scanned the image.
Step 3: On black paper, like this, I like to start with the lightest areas first. I then come in with mid range tones. I prefer to do the core image before the background.
Step 4: Shading and specific colors are acheived by layering many colors over the top of one another. Most parts of this drawing will have four or more layers of different colors, one on top of the other. The darkest areas simply use the black of the paper.
Step 5: The background of grass is created using many shades of greens and some touch of browns, blues, and yellows.
Step 6: Final touches are put onto the piece, including the addition of highlights to make the image "pop".
This color pencil drawing took about 10 hours to complete. The photograph for this image and the drawing remain in my possesion. If you are interested in purchasing the original of this peice please contact me.
